I saw him long before the new years eve on jools holland in oslo. an I knew that he was going to be the new fucking thing. And my friends where like ahhh he’s just a bum and ignored him. Ironic???
Pretty hilarious that the hideous London wankers who go to see recordings of Jools Holland suddenly take a liking to box cart blues. Next they’ll be nodding their heads to Coldplay.
and that he would tour the world telling his story of how Sherman ripped him off.[7] All in good fun as Sherman is a good buddy. A lot of the time he also adds (while picking up or putting away the guitar) that it is the “…biggest piece of shit in the world, I swear”. During recent performances, including his set at 2008’s Latitude and also Leeds and Reading 2008, the guitar had only two strings.
This is a normal guitar, but with only three strings. It has an old Harmony pickup added (with duct tape) and is played tuned to G, G and B using an E string in the A position, a D in the G position and a G in the B position. At his gigs, he often tells the story that he bought it for $75 in this condition in Como, Mississippi from a man named Sherman, who later told him he only paid $25 for it the day before. Steve vowed never to add another string,
If you like this stuff then you should seek out the late great R L Burnside and see how it’s really done.I’m not dissing Steve,I just think R L is better.
Don’t thumbs down him.. He’s telling the truth! it was given to him by his real life friend sherman who bought it for 25 dollars and sold him it for 50 and he promised never to put another string on it and keep it as it was with 3 strings
The diddley bow was made by him and his friend super chiken
lol you put thunmbs down on me? he didn’t make it, but he put the strings on and decorated it. he didn’t put the right strings in the right places either.
All of you who fell for his fake act have no knowledge of real blues artists whatsoever.
Will someone explain to me how it is a man born in Oakland, CA, leaves Olympia, WA [after working as a music technician in the 90s] for NORWAY, suddenly acquires a hobo persona, hobo clothes and a bluesy southern accent, and a back story of livin’ on the road?
They’ve never heard of anyone called “Seasick Steve” in the USA – because the fool invented the entire act.
The guy’s as genuine as a two dollar whore with a crack habit.
Sadly Steve is a fake. A session musician filling a gap in the market at a point in time when it’s possible to do so. Personally I find his demeanour, his apearnace and his speech an insult to the thousands of musicians, both black and white, who overcame real hardship to make so much beautiful music. Steve’s playing is phony, hokey, call it what you will – and it is plagiaristic, it is TOO knowing…..
Steve – best of luck to you for making a buck, no shame in that. But take a look at BB King – he was born on a plantation in Mississippi, played for dimes on the street as a teenager, worked his ass off for more than 60 years – and he always wears an immaculate $5000 suit, because he’s made it and he’s proud.
