Seasick Steve – Hobo Low

Phoemail asked:

Seasick Steve singing Hobo Low from his album Dog House Blues, live at the Thekla Social in Bristol on the 17th of April 2007. The mid-song pause where he says “I’m trying to here something interesting” is because loads of people at the back were talking. Seasick was challenging the audience to stay quiet.

this dude is the easily the coolest hobo in the world, in 20 years history he’s gonna set off a whole new blues genre history, what amazes me is he’s got elements of robert johnson and an artist who has that can go a long way

I just love the gentle smile throughout this set – just as he was breaking this really was a seminal performance, he knew what was happening… full crowd at a small venue … sell out tours ever since, all the way Steve ….

he became a producer in early 70s and then went on touring and playing with other blues musicians in the late 80s early 90’s. at the age of 13 he left home…an then live on the streets until the 70s… he was born in the 1940s thats at least 10..15 years in poverty and even after he became a proucer it wasnt a stable job. as far as im concerned he did well to get “straight out of the gutter ” and into the music buisness after 10 years on the streets.

It’s both, I think there is a mic inside the box, Because I’ve tried this same technique on a box and I couldn’t get the same sound he does. But then again maybe it’s a specially bass wood box.

A lot of blues is like that really, more like trains i think since so much of it originated around them like u can hear in this song or a lot of older blues songs the guitar just sounds like a train chugging along, its really nice
